Carol Harmer
Carol
Harmer was born on December 19th 1929 in Fairview Idaho a mile from the Utah
state line. Her parents were Margret Rue and Alonzo Harding. She was the fourth
child out of 7 children. She had three brothers and three sisters.
Her father ran and owned a gas station and store next to their home. She
would work in the store a lot cleaning and stocking shelves. Her father was
killed by a drunk driver when she was nine so she had to help in the store a
lot more and help take care of her sick mother. She helped raise two brothers.
One
of her fondest memories of her father was when they would go five miles up the
canyon with their father. They would play in the river have lunch and then go
home. It was a treat.
One
thing that Carol loved was music. She would sing all the time. She would sing
duets with her sister. She had one of the leads in the Opera at Preston High as
well as two of her other siblings. She also loved gardening. One of her chores
was to take the cows out to pasture. Carol didn't graduate high school at the
normal time every one else did because she was too busy taking care of her
mother and she got married at the age of Seventeen.
Carol
met her first husband through her mother. Both her mother and his mother were good
friends. She would write him while he was in the service and when he came home
he came and watched her perform in a music festival. They were married
September 1946. Carol had eight children, but lost one, with her first husband
and they were married for 38 years before they got a divorce.
Her
First husband worked in Preston he worked as a plumber. After four years they
moved to Utah. She would sell textile painting and would paint figurines just
to make some money.
Carol
sang every chance she got. She would sing at funerals in Idaho Falls. She even
sang with the Tabernacle Choir in Canada and Ceder City before she found out
she had cancer of the throat. All of her children where involved in music.
Carol
had six children before she went back and graduated high school and got her
degree. She did her last years of high school in six months. She worked as an
aid in a hospital. She furthered her education by going to Weber State and
getting her nursing degree. She was an RN for twenty years.
After
Carol divorced her first husband she met and married Orval. She met Orval at a
singles dance in Ogden. They were married and she moved from Springville to
Ogden where they lived for twenty years. One thing they loved to do was travel.
They traveled throughout the world. They went to China, England, Denmark, and
St. Petersburg just to name a few.
Carol
and Orval moved to the Seville the first week of March 2012. On March 14th
Orval was involved in a horrible accident. He was T-boned after taking her to
the doctor. So now Orval resides in a facility outside the Seville. She loves
the Seville. They have taken good care of her especially through all the stress
of Orval's accident. She loves the activites and the other residents.
