This is one of my fantasy pieces. Enjoy!
The night seemed to grow darker as Hannah plunged deeper into the forest. The trail was hard to see in front of her, even with a flashlight. Hannah heard a loud crack behind her. She turned startled. She could feel the icy cold hand of fear touch her spine. She saw nothing. She continued down the trail keeping her flashlight alert in front of her. She started to whistle to calm her nerves. Suddenly she heard another loud crack break the silence behind her. She spun around, eyes scanning the darkness as her flashlight bounced off of every tree and bush before it landed on a pair of glowing amber eyes in the shadows of a tall tree in the distance. It took her a minute to realize what type of animal it was. A big gray and white body of fur emerged into the light. Hannah wanted to scream but the noise was suppressed in her throat. Standing by the tree was a wolf baring its sharp white teeth and growling in a low threatening tone. Then without warning three other wolves appeared by its side. Their amber and green eyes locked on Hannah. Hannah's legs went numb and her heart thudded against her rib cage like a jack hammer. She had a million thoughts racing through her mind. She knew she had to run, but the question was, could she get her legs to move. She took a step backwards then another. The wild dogs slowly moved in step with Hannah ready to leap into action the moment their victim decided to run. Hannah found her courage and spun quickly on her heel and took off as fast as she could down the trail deeper into the woods. The wolves saw this and leaped into gear after her growling and barking madly. Hannah ran as fast as her legs would carry her, considering the heavy bag she carried around her shoulder. She couldn't loose her only chance of survival but she knew if the wolves got any closer she would have to drop what she had. Her flashlight danced across the trail ahead of her. She could hear the swift movements of the wolves behind her growing closer. Her legs grew tired and her throat dry. Her breaths came fast and sharp. She could feel the aching pain in her side. She turned her head to see how close the beasts were. No sooner had she turned her head her foot caught on a root of a tree and she fell flat on face tumbling with the bag still on her shoulder through the dirt and dried leaves. She curled up in a ball and shut her eyes so tight they began to water. She waited for the pain of the sharp teeth of the rabid wolves, but nothing happened. Hannah opened one of her eyes slowly expecting to see the amber eyes glaring down at her. She saw nothing, only the dark mysterious figures of the trees clawing up toward the black sky. She sat up allowing her muscles to relax. The forest looked different to her, but maybe she was just further into the forest than she had ever been before. She looked around for her flashlight that she dropped in the process of spinning out of control after taking her fall, but she could find the light.
"That's strange. I know I had it before I fell and it shouldn't be too far from where I landed." She said aloud to herself. She searched a little more before going to her bag and pulling out another flashlight. She turned it on and moved it along the trees. She noticed a medium sized hole in one of the tree trunks. She stood up and carried her bag over to the hole. Hannah allowed her flashlight to shine on the inside checking to make sure no ferocious animals popped into sight. It was big enough to lay down inside, but the ceiling was low so she could not sit up. She pushed her bag through the hole. A loud crack behind her made her jump. She whipped around expecting to see the wolves lining up for round two but she saw nothing. She returned to the hole in the tree and got down on all fours and crawled inside allowing her bag to be her pillow. Hannah turned off her light and drifted off to sleep. A dark figure emerged from behind a bush watching as Hannah slept.
